This stretch of the Aegean and Mediterranean holds two very different holiday towns and a peninsula that belongs to neither. Bodrum is a marina town that spreads across a peninsula of separate bays; Marmaris sits in a deep pine-ringed harbour; Datça is the long quiet arm between them.

Base in Bodrum if you want a marina town with a castle, a dense restaurant scene and ferry links; base in Marmaris if you want a sheltered harbour, a long promenade and gulet cruises leaving from the doorstep. Datça is the third option and a deliberate one — quieter water, smaller hotels and a longer drive to reach any of it.

The decision that actually matters on this coast is the bay, not the town. "Bodrum" covers a whole peninsula of separate coves, each with its own character and its own distance from the centre. Confirm the bay name with the property before you compare anything else.

The mistake travellers make here is booking "Bodrum" and finding themselves in a bay half an hour from the castle and the marina. Bay names matter more than town names on this coast — confirm which one you are actually in before comparing prices.

Bodrum

The town itself wraps around a castle and two harbours, with the marina, the bars and most of the restaurants within walking distance of each other. It works well without a car and has the best evening life on the peninsula. The town beach, though, is small and functional — the good swimming is out in the surrounding bays, which is where most of the hotel stock actually sits.

Marmaris

Marmaris occupies a deep bay ringed by pine-covered hills, which keeps the water sheltered and the setting green. Datça

The Datça peninsula stretches west between the Aegean and the Mediterranean, and the drive out is long and winding by design — that is what has kept it quiet. Expect small hotels, clear water and slow days. Expect also to need a car, and to accept that the airport is a significant journey away.

Ula & the inland bays

Between and around the resort towns sit smaller pine-backed coves, some with a handful of properties and little else. They suit travellers who want water and quiet rather than a town. A car moves from useful to close to essential here, and the nearest supermarket may be a drive rather than a walk.

From the terminal to the hotel door

Two airports serve this coast and they are not interchangeable: Milas–Bodrum sits north of Bodrum, while Dalaman serves Marmaris and the south-east. Booking a hotel in one town and flights into the other airport is the most common and most expensive mistake made here.

Transfers to bay hotels frequently end on narrow, steep access roads. If you are arriving after dark or with heavy luggage, confirm that the property can be reached by the vehicle you have booked and that someone will be at reception.

Within either town, walking plus the dolmuş network covers most needs, and boats connect several bays in season — often more pleasantly than the road. Ask the property which water connections operate in your travel month, as many are seasonal.

Between bays and out to Datça, a car changes the trip. Roads are good but winding, and journey times are longer than the distances suggest. Check parking with the property before assuming it exists, particularly in central Bodrum.
