The peninsula is seasonal and the city is not. If you are travelling outside the summer, the city base keeps everything open; in high summer the peninsula is where the trip actually happens.
Start with the area
The two are close enough to combine and different enough that trying to do both from one hotel means a lot of driving. Pick which half the trip is really about.
Konak is central İzmir — the Kordon waterfront, the Kemeraltı bazaar, the clock tower and the ferries across the bay. It works entirely on foot plus the metro and is the practical base for reaching Ephesus and the northern Aegean sites. It is a city district, so swimming means a drive or a ferry, not a walk downstairs.

At the peninsula’s tip, Çeşme combines a castle, a marina and a run of beaches with thermal water in places. It is the most straightforward beach base out here and has enough infrastructure to work without a car. In high season it is busy, and outside the season a noticeable share of it closes.

Alaçatı is a stone village of narrow streets, boutique hotels and courtyard restaurants that became one of Türkiye’s best-known small destinations. The windsurfing bay that made its name is a short drive away rather than at the end of the street — a distinction worth confirming, because the village itself has no beach.

Between the city and the peninsula, Urla and Seferihisar hold vineyards, small bays and a slower food-led scene. It suits travellers who want the coast without the resort density. A car is close to essential here, and evening options are limited compared with either Çeşme or the city.

İzmir Airport sits south of the city with good rail and road links into it, and the peninsula is roughly an hour west by motorway. Ask the property for a door-to-door estimate; the difference between a city and a peninsula base is significant at either end of the day.
If you are heading straight to Alaçatı or Çeşme after a late arrival, confirm the transfer in advance. The motorway is good but the last stretch into village streets is narrow, and parking there is restricted.
İzmir has a metro, a suburban rail line and ferries across the bay, and the city works well without a car. Check current services at source before relying on them for a fixed plan.
On the peninsula, a car changes the trip — bays, vineyards and the smaller beaches are poorly served otherwise. In Alaçatı specifically, ask the property where a car can actually be left.
