Antalya is not one resort but a long coastline with a working city in the middle. The old town sits on a cliff above a Roman harbour, two very different city beaches stretch away on either side, and the big resort belts — Kemer to the west, Belek and Side to the east — begin well beyond the airport. The distance between them is the decision.

Stay inside Antalya — Muratpaşa for the old town, Konyaaltı for the beach promenade — if you want to walk out of the hotel into restaurants, ruins and ordinary city life. Choose a resort belt instead, Kemer to the west or Belek and Side to the east, if the point of the trip is a long beach and a hotel you rarely leave.
The two are genuinely different holidays and they are separated by the airport. Decide which one you are taking before you compare rates, because the cheaper resort deal stops looking cheap once every dinner in town costs a taxi in each direction.
Start with the area
Start with how much you intend to leave the hotel. A stay inside the city keeps restaurants, ruins and a real street life on foot; a resort belt trades that for a longer, quieter beach and an all-inclusive rhythm. Both are legitimate. Choosing the wrong one costs you an hour in a transfer van every time you want the other.
The central district holds Kaleiçi, the walled old town above the Roman harbour, along with the museum, the main promenade and most of the year-round restaurants. It is the base that works without a car and the only one where evenings happen on foot. The compromise is the swimming: the shoreline here is cliff and small rocky inlets rather than a long beach.

West of the centre, Konyaaltı is a long pebble beach backed by a park and a promenade, with the Taurus mountains closing the view. It gives you a real beach day and a walkable strip of cafés while keeping the old town within a short ride. Pebble underfoot suits some travellers and not others — worth knowing before booking rather than after.

South-west along the coast, Kemer sits where the mountains meet the sea, with pine-backed coves and a marina town at the centre. The scenery is the strongest on this coast and the water is clear. In exchange you accept distance: from the airport, from the old town, and from anything not organised by your hotel.

East of the airport, Serik and Belek hold the sand beaches, the golf courses and the largest resort grounds in the region. It is the most straightforward choice for a family week where the resort is the destination. There is very little to walk to outside the gates, so the hotel needs to be one you are happy inside.

Antalya Airport sits between the city and the eastern resort belt, which is why transfer times vary so much across what looks like one destination. A city hotel and a Kemer hotel are on opposite sides of it. Ask the property for a realistic door-to-door figure for your arrival hour rather than a distance in kilometres.
If you are arriving late, confirm that reception is staffed overnight and that your transfer is booked rather than assumed. Coastal roads here are good but long, and the last stretch to a bay resort is not somewhere to be improvising at two in the morning.
Inside the city, the tram and a dense bus network connect the old town, Konyaaltı and the museum, and most central stays work on foot plus the occasional short ride. Check current routes at source close to travel — services change and a printed guide from a previous season is not reliable.
Out in the resort belts, movement is dolmuş, hotel shuttle or taxi. Shuttles are common but not universal and frequently stop early in the evening. If you intend to eat outside the hotel more than once or twice, price that in before choosing a base.
