Chania
Chania wraps around a Venetian harbour with a lighthouse at its mouth, backed by a dense old town of narrow lanes and a modern city behind. It is the most atmospheric base on the island and the natural one for the west — the gorges, the south coast and the famous western beaches all start from here. The town beaches are ordinary; the celebrated ones are a drive.
