The old town is a Venetian survivor of arcaded streets, two fortresses and a cricket ground on the esplanade, and it is genuinely lived in. South of the town, this stretch holds the Achilleion palace and a coastline that runs from pleasant to heavily developed depending on exactly where you land. It is close to the airport and the town, which is its main practical argument. Ask the property to describe its immediate surroundings honestly — the variation here is real.

The north-east coast is a series of small pebble coves beneath olive-covered hills, with low-key villages and calm, clear water. It is the quietest and prettiest part of the island for swimming. The roads in are narrow and winding, nightlife is minimal, and a car is effectively required.

The west takes the open sea, which gives it the larger sandy beaches, the dramatic cliffs around Paleokastritsa and the sunsets. It also means less shelter when the wind is up. Development is patchier here, so check what is within walking distance of the property.

Corfu Airport sits just outside the town, so town and southern bases are short transfers while the north-east is a considerably longer, winding drive. Ferries also arrive from the mainland and from Italy.
