The old trading town is a dense maze of carved doors, Omani and Indian architecture, markets and the evening food stalls at Forodhani. It is compact and walkable and holds the island’s history. It is not a beach base — hot, busy and urban — so most itineraries pair a couple of nights here with a beach stay.

The northern tip has the island’s most reliably swimmable beaches, where the tidal range is much less pronounced than on the east. This is why it is also the busiest and most developed stretch, with a wide range of hotels, restaurants and dive operators. For a straightforward beach holiday, it is the practical answer.

Beaches such as Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi have wide, brilliant white sand and turquoise water at high tide, and at low tide the sea can retreat hundreds of metres, exposing seagrass and coral flats. It is superb for kitesurfing and for walking, and frustrating if you expected to swim on demand. Ask each property directly.

Zanzibar’s airport lies near Stone Town, so town stays are short transfers while the north and east coasts are considerably longer drives. Ferries also connect the island with Dar es Salaam.
