Start with the area
The airport sits in the south-east, so transfer times vary considerably by coast. That is worth knowing before you choose a resort at the far end of the island.
The north is the most developed part of the island, with a genuine town at Grand Baie — restaurants, shops, boat operators and a nightlife of sorts. If you want the option of eating outside your hotel every night, this is the coast that offers it. It is also the busiest, and the beaches here are smaller than those on the east.

The west coast has a long calm beach, good diving offshore and the island’s best sunsets, with Le Morne at its southern end. It is sheltered from the prevailing wind, which makes it hot and still in the summer months. There is a reasonable amount of dining outside the resorts, though less than in the north.

The east has the widest lagoons and the biggest resort properties, with reliable wind that makes it the kitesurfing side of the island. The beaches are excellent. There is very little outside the resort gates, so this coast suits a stay where you intend to remain on the property.

The south is the wildest part of Mauritius — cliffs, the Black River Gorges inland, Le Morne rising above the lagoon, and comparatively few hotels. It suits travellers who want scenery and quiet over convenience. Everything else on the island is a long drive.
