Palermo
Palermo is a dense, layered capital where Norman, Arab and Baroque work sit on the same street, and the street markets are still working markets. It is the natural base for the north-west, including the temples further south and the coastal towns west of the city. It is a city rather than a resort: the good beaches are outside it, and the rhythm is urban.
