Chaweng is the island’s main beach — long, sandy, deep enough to swim at most states of the tide, and backed by the densest concentration of hotels, restaurants and bars. It is the easiest base and the busiest. The northern end is generally quieter than the centre, which is worth specifying when booking.

South of Chaweng, Lamai has a good beach and a smaller, more manageable town behind it. It offers much of what Chaweng does at a slightly slower pace and often lower rates. The choice between them is largely about how much activity you want within walking distance.

On the north coast, Fisherman’s Village at Bophut is the most characterful part of the island — a strip of wooden shophouses with restaurants and a weekly market. The beach is narrower and the water shallower than Chaweng, so it suits travellers who want atmosphere and dining more than long swims.

These coasts are quieter, greener and better for sunsets, with boutique resorts scattered along them. The significant caveat is the tide: several beaches here become very shallow at low water, and swimming can be impossible for part of the day. Ask the property directly about this.

Samui has its own airport in the north-east of the island, and there are also ferry routes from the mainland combined with bus or air connections. Transfers within the island are short by regional standards, but the ring road can be slow in places.
If you are arriving by ferry, confirm the onward transfer with the property — pier-to-hotel arrangements vary and the piers are not all on the same side of the island.
A single ring road circles the island, served by songthaews, taxis and app-based rides. Distances are short but journeys can be slower than expected. Ask the property what typical fares look like to the areas you plan to visit.
