Doha is compact and its metro is inexpensive, so the base matters less than in most Gulf cities. What matters is the season: the Corniche is a pleasure to walk in the cooler months and impossible in summer.
Start with the area
The city is genuinely walkable along the Corniche in the cooler months and genuinely not in summer. Which season you are travelling in should shape where you stay.
West Bay is the tower district, holding most of the international business hotels along with malls and the northern end of the Corniche. It is convenient and comfortable, with a corporate atmosphere and limited street life. The metro connects it well to the rest of the city.

The regenerated Msheireb district sits beside Souq Waqif, the restored market that is the liveliest place in the city in the evening — restaurants, shisha, falconry and crowds. It is the most characterful base. Hotels here are fewer and there is no beach.

A reclaimed island of marinas, apartments and waterfront restaurants, The Pearl feels residential and polished. Dining along the marina is the main draw. It is some distance from the museums and the souq, so plan on transport for sightseeing.

The southern end of the bay holds the Museum of Islamic Art and its park, with views back across the water to West Bay. It is quiet and cultural. Dining immediately nearby is limited, so evenings usually mean travelling to the souq or West Bay.
