Most trips want both. The practical question is which one you sleep in, because commuting between them daily eats the days. Hoi An for atmosphere, Da Nang for a city beach and infrastructure.

The beaches nearest Hoi An give you sand within easy reach of the old town, with beach restaurants and a low-key scene. An Bang is the more established. Da Nang’s long city beach runs for kilometres with a promenade, restaurants and a mix of large hotels behind it. It offers a proper beach with a real city attached, plus the shortest airport transfer. It is a city beach rather than a secluded one, and the atmosphere is modern rather than historic.

Da Nang International Airport sits in the city, making Da Nang beaches a short transfer and Hoi An a longer but straightforward drive. Ask the property to arrange or recommend the transfer and confirm the cost in advance.
For Hoi An old-town properties, ask where a vehicle can stop. Parts of the old town restrict traffic during certain hours, and arriving during those times means walking the last stretch.
Taxis and app-based rides connect Da Nang and Hoi An reliably and inexpensively, and many hotels run shuttles. Bicycles are the standard way to move around Hoi An itself and between the town and An Bang.
